MINUTES <br />City Council <br />April l4, i982 <br />Mr, Carl <br />5wanson <br />(Cont.) <br />is just another £orm of taxatian and nothing else, Mr. S~anson stated <br />that the City needs business, and should help business, <br />Mr, Hanson stated ttzat he does not agree 100% with what Mr. S*+aanson <br />is saying about taxes. Mr. Hanson felt the present and previous Co~cils <br />have been fisca.lly responsib].e. Mr. Hanson stated that the Council <br />was shaken with the tax statements that came out' nnd paad additaonal <br />money to get a report from the City~s auditor on this. <br />Mr, Hanson stated that at budget time the City has tried to cut back <br />and place money in reserve and investments to wi.pe out some of the <br />City's bond indebt,edness. <br />Mr. Hanson stated that the bottom line is what the County and the School <br />llistrict havebeen doing, NTr. Aanson reported that the Chamber o£ Co~erce <br />is going to.~~ve a meeting to get a report from the County and the <br />School District on what they are doing. <br />A member of the audience commented that when taxes are levied against <br />businesses~ they have to r~ise their prices and then they do not get <br />any work. <br />Mr. Hanson pointed out that the City of Little Canada has lower~d its <br />mill rate. <br />Pat Pet•erson commented that another business ta~c is not what businesses <br />need. <br />Mrs. Scalze commented that it is easzer to complain at City level' <br />however~ the City has cut its mills. The City cannot do anything <br />about the County or School District. <br />N'ir. F'orsberg commented that Iattle Canada is in a pretty good position <br />as it is small and does not have many full-time employees, Mr. Forsberg <br />commented that the City's problem is fisca]. da.sparities. Mr. Forsberg <br />also felt that the Fire Department and Recreation Department are <br />provid~ng good services to the Cityfsm the cost. <br />Mrs, NardinS. commented that pol9.ce protection As what is costing the <br />City a great deal of money, Mr, Hanson pointed out that out o£ a <br />budget of $329r000 police protection takes up $201,000. Mr. Forsberg <br />stated that the Sherif£~s Department no longer provides embulance <br />S 22'V 1CP, e <br />Mrs. Scalze commented that for every person comp~aining to the City <br />there is a person who mttlces demands on the City a7.so. <br />Mr. Hanson stated that with regard to the Buildi.ng Inepector he did <br />not attend the meeting at which he was hired, Hanson stated that when <br />the temporary appointment was made he felt it was clear].y understood <br />with the Bu~-lding Inspector that it was for a six month appointment. <br />Ilanson stated that he wanted the situation to stay status quo. <br />Page -19- <br />
