MINUTES <br />City Council <br />Nov. ].5, 1982 <br />Sign <br />Ordinance <br />Amendment <br />(Cont.) <br />Mr. Hanson asked if. the grand opening will be concluded Uy the <br />middle of December. Mr. P,rody repl:ied that it probabLy wouLd be. <br />Mrs. Scalze asked Mr. llrody how the V~iking Partnership determined <br />the signage thaC is already up on the building. Mr. 13rody <br />repli.ed that Vilcin~ Partnership tried to limiL- the amount of <br />signage by the square f.oo[age that a tenant had. Mr. Srody <br />commented that other si.~;ns are awaiting the possi.bility of an <br />ordinance amendment before they ar.e put up. Drody also pointed <br />out that the pylon is not yet up. <br />Mr. John Daly representi.ng Levitz appeared before the Council. <br />Mr. Daly commented that Levity has been Crying to put up a sign <br />advertisi.ng the fact Chat they now sell carpet. ThereEore, <br />LeviCZ i.s in favor of the ordinance being amended as they are <br />currently at 10% of their silouette for si.gnage and would need <br />an increase in order to be able to put up a carpet sign. <br />The Planner poi.nted out that a business that is located on a corner <br />loC can have 10% of the silouette £or si.gnage on both szdes ot the <br />buileting that are f.ronting streets. <br />Mrs. Scalze pointed out that the ~oay the ordinance is set up it <br />benef.its the buildi.ng wi.th more street frontage. <br />The Planner commented that Levitz would lilce to acivertise an <br />additional product that they have. The Planner pointed out that <br />in this respect a grocery store could aslc to adverti.se every pr.oduct <br />that it sell.s. <br />Mrs. Nardini commented that if the percenta~e ~vas increased to 20% <br />Levitz caould be able to put up a carpet sign. <br />Mr. Hanson stated that the I~ui.lding Inspector has sai.d that signs <br />are a problem for enforcement. <br />Mrs. Nardini stated that she was in favor of getti.ng rid of the small <br />signs that are on the boulevards all over the City. Nardini stated <br />that these si.gns are not fair to businesses Like Levitz. Nardini <br />commented that the City shouLd not enforce the ordinance for. some <br />people and not others. <br />Mr, Ilanson stated thaT. if. the City a1l.ows for an expansion of. si.Louette <br />area, it should provide for a reducti.on of the small signs. <br />Mr. Nielson pointed out tha[ the $10 fee £or small si.~ns was to pr.ovide <br />for signage for grand openi.ngs and special sales. Al.lowing these <br />permi.ts to be renewed week after week is skirtinp, the ordinance. <br />The Planner stated that some communities only allow these types of <br />signs twice per year. <br />Page -7- <br />
