Olson inf.ormed the Council that Section ]OS of <br />the bui.ldi.ng code sets out equal al.ternatives to sprinlcleri.ng Lor. <br />certai.n types of. huildi.ngs, flowever, these are not allowed i.f Appendix <br />G has been adopted, <br />Prantc Graczyk of the P'ire Department commented that a sprintcler system <br />does not prevent fires, but does prevent Large fires and buys some <br />ti.me Lor the Pire Department. Gr.aczylc stated that anything the City can <br />cio i.n the dixecti.on of. sprinlcl.er systems wi.ll delay the Ci.ty havi.ng <br />to bui.ld a ne~v fire station across the Preezaay, Gr.aczylc stated that <br />the adoption of. Appencti.x ~ was a step in the right directi.on. Gracz.yk <br />stated that .if Appendi.x E saved one fireman's life, it coas worth it:. <br />Mr, ktanson asked for the Pire Department's f.eetings on f-ighti.np, fires <br />in pole bui.ldi.ngs. Mr. Graczylc stated that this type of buildi-ng i.s <br />more apt to coll.apsinp coi.th I.ess heat than other types of bu:i.ldi.ngs. <br />Mr, Peter.son poi.nted out that these are one story buildings with no <br />people occupying them other than worlci.ng hours. Peterson commented <br />that t:hese buildings have access on a ll. si.des. <br />A1r. Fahey pointed out that a roo[ has to be vented during a fire and <br />the Fire Department i.s responsible [o make every effort to save <br />property. <br />Ms. Olson statecl that she has two cli.ents that have a poss:ibility of. <br />losing Chei.r buildinos. Olson pointed out Chat many bui.ldings in the <br />parlc~aill be grand-f.athered in and wil7. be without spri.nkler systems. <br />One is the Little Canada Garage. Olson stated that her tcoo clients <br />acted in good faith and got caught in the si.tuati.on. <br />Mr. Paltey stated that every builder. in the Ci.ty cou7.d l~ave tkie same <br />argument no matter what date Appendi.x T was adopted. <br />Mr. Wermer stated that he ac;reecl, but wlien he toolc out h:is buildinp, <br />permit no one told him of the requirement of: a spri.nlcler system. <br />Wermer pointed out that they tr:i.ed to get in on the September 14 <br />meeti_ng. <br />The Clerlc pointed out that the request to get in on the 14th meeting <br />was made on September ].3. <br />Ntr, Pahey sCaCed that the Ci.ty probably assumed that the building would <br />be Uui.lt to City Code, Wermer replied t:hat he was never requested <br />Co submit spri.nlcler plans or esti.mates< <br />Mr. i~'ahey aslced whaC Che City could do withouT, jeopar<lizing the enforce- <br />ment of the ordinance i.n the Schri.er development.
