MINi1TES <br />City Council <br />Jan. 4, 1984 <br />Mr. Vadnais also pointed out that pole buildings are a high fire <br />rislc. <br />Mrs. Scalze commented that the people with the more expensi.ve building <br />is not afraid to sprinkler i.t, it is the people with the cheaper <br />buildin~s that are opposi.ng this. <br />Mrs. Nardini pointed out that the Little Canada Day Care Center is <br />opposi.ng Appendix E. <br />Mr. Vadnais stated that the Gity's main responsibility today is to iCs <br />fire f.i.ghters. Vadnais pointed out that a developer might want to <br />build in a city because of low taxes and it is the volunteer fire <br />department that helped to maintain these taxes. <br />Mr. Pete Costa stated that he sympathized with Mr. Krejci as hi.s cash <br />flow will not handle this additional. expense. Mrs. Nardini pointed <br />out that the City has seen bids, but probably not the lowest one. <br />Mr. P'ahey pointed out that the City can include the installation of <br />the pipe in a City water project and then assess the cost back agai.nst <br />the property. Nardini commented that this would lower the cost of <br />bringing the caater supply to the building. <br />Karolyn Kingsbury pointed out that she works coith small children and <br />it takes a long ti.me to get children out o£ a burning building. <br />Kinp,sbury stated ~hat the Day Care Center has a sma11 staff and time <br />is needed to get childr.en out. <br />Mr. Hanson poi.nted out that the Day Care Genter is located across the <br />street from the I~'ire Department. Hanson stated that even ~aith the <br />adoption of Appendix E the time will come ~ohen an additional. fire <br />station will be needed across the freeway, <br />Mr. Forsberg pointed out that the Little Canada Road bridge wi11 be <br />~videned to a four-lane bridge. <br />Mr. Jim Embertson of. the Maplewood P'ire Department poi.nted out that <br />the problem in MapLewood is getting people to volunteer for ehe fire <br />department. <br />Mrs. Scalze aslced if Maplewood has had problems with sma11 business <br />people fighting Appendix E. F.mbertson replied that they did not, but <br />there have been some questions on it. <br />Fahey asked :if the City could require that apartments converting to <br />condos be sprinklered. Mr. Locke pointed out that both an apartment <br />and a condo are located in R-1 districts and therefore, spri.nklers <br />could not be required in a conversion. The City Clerk pointed out <br />that conver.sions need the approval of the Ci.ty. <br />Page -4- <br />
