MrriurEs
City Council
Dec. 23, 19II6
Imp. No
87-1
(Cont.)
The Engineer agreed that this could be done, however, there would
then be a dead-end line.
Fahey felt that the cost of looping was prohibitive and pointed
out that there are other dead-end lines in the City.
Mr. Dlesener asked if the buildings could be sprinklered without
watermain.
Mr. Zilge replied that surplus tanks could be installed in order
to sprinkler the buildings. Zilge felt that this would be less
expensive than running watermain into the area.
Fahey commented that the Council would need verification of this
from the Building Inspector. Fahey stated that he was not in favor
of watermain as long as there is adequate service to the area that
could meet Code requirements for sprinklering if necessary.
Scalze asked if the road would need to be torn up in the future
in order to put in watermain.
The Engineer replied that the street would need to be torn up if
watermain were installed in the road easement. Nowever, there is
the possibility of getting an additional easement along the side
of the road right-of-way for watermain.
The Engineer pointed out that this is industrial property, and
he knows of no other industrial property that does not have watermain.
The Engineer stated that the purpose of the watermain is for fire
protection and having these buildings sprinklered would save the
property owners in insurance costs.
Zilge stated that it will take him 15 years to recover the cost of
a sprinkler system on another building he owns through insurance
savings.
Fuel Economy suggested that watermain could be brought in from
Rice Street.
The Engineer stated that this is a possibility and pointed out that
the State Nighway Department will be rebuilding Woodlyn Avenue.
Mr. Harry Kath pointed out that this might not be the time to
place the burden of this improvement on the businesses in the
area as with the State rebuilding Rice Street, the businesses
will experience a tremendous hardship.
The Engineer pointed out that the Highway Department will have to
provide some access for these businesses to their property during
construction. However, agreed that the situation will be a difficult
one.
Page -8-
