MINUTES
City Council
March 11, 1987
Storage Mr. Collova reported that he has discussed the proposed ordinance
Of Fire regulating the storage of firewood with the Building Inspector and
Wood the requirement for the storage of wood 12 inches off the ground
was to prevent nesting in a wood pile. However, the 12-inch figure
Agenda is an arbitrary one. Also, firewood could be stored next to an
Item No. 15a attached garage, as this is not considered a habitat. This requirement
is also to prevent nesting, in that rodents might nest in a woodpile
stored nest to a house as the house will give off heat and create a
warm place for nesting. Collova also reported that it is his recommen-
dation that wood storage be allowed in sideyards, however, not in the
required sideyard.
Fahey questioned the requirement that a woodpile be 10 feet from a
house and asked why the figure of 10 feet was picked rather than
2 or 3 or 4 feet.
Collova noted that the main point of this requirement is to keep the
woodpile away from the heat generating from a house.
Scalze asked if there were ordinances that have been adopted by
other cities that have proven to be workable that the Council
could review.
Collova pointed out that the Building Inspector would like this covered
in the Code so if there is a problem, he will have the Code to enforce.
Elaine Zoch commented that she did not feel nesting occurs in ~,~oodpiles
unless there is a food source nearby that would attract rodents to
the area. However, the woodpile itself is not a food source.
Fahey felt that a distance of not more than two feet would be
reasonable for a woodpile to be from a house.
Fahey suggested that the matter be tabled and that the City Clerk and
Building Inspector contact the Health Department and determine if in
the absence of trash or a food source, if a woodpile is an attractive
nesting area for rodents.
Bike Path Mrs. Scalze reported that the City has received a letter from the
On Keller County stating that there are no State or County funds available for
Parkway the construction of bike paths.
Agenda The City Clerk noted that it is evident that if the City wants a
Item No. 16a bike path on Keller Parkway, it will have to install it. The Clerk
also indicated that the time to install such a path would be if and
when watermain is installed on Keller Parkway.
Fahey noted that the bike path would be a low priority for the City
due to the State and Federal cuts experienced by the City.
Page -9-
