MINUTES
City Council
Sept. 23, 1987
Slumberland Mr. Richard Lange of Sign Consultants, Inc., representing Slumberland,
(Cont.) appeared before the Council and reported that the sign height variance
is being requested to improve visibility along the freeway, pointing
out the varying elevations along the freeway as well as a berm. The
square footage variance is being requested not to increase tne size
of the lettering of the sign, but to increase the negative space
around the lettering, which will make the sign more readable. Also,
the sign would have angled lettering, which is in keeping with the
Slumberland corporate logo, which they would like to maintain.
Fahey asked what the City did in the case of the McDonalds' sign
variance request.
The Planner replied that the City denied a variance for sign height
which McDonalds was requesting to increase visibility from Highway
36 as well as a variance for a second free-standing sign.
Fahey asked if the City's ordinance was in line with what other communities
are doing.
The Planner replied that it was not out of line with other communities'
ordinances.
Scalze pointed out that when the City amended its sign ord.inance a
few years ago, it increased the amount of signage allowable from 10%
of thesilhouette of a building to 15%.
Blesener felt the sign as proposed was more in keeping with a
commercial area and not a corporate headquarters. Blesener stated
that he had expected a more toned-down style of sign.
Lange stated that the site may become a commercial location.
Blesener pointed out that the property is not zoned commercial, and
retail sales was approved only as an accessory use for the site.
Blesener also pointed out that a sign height variance was granted to
Connco, but pointed out that the roof of the Connco building is below
the freeway. Blesener reported that the Slumberland site is very
visible from the freeway system, and he questioned the need for a sign
height variance.
Scalze agreed and reported that she looked at the area and there is
good visibility from the Slumberland site to the freeway.
Blesener did not feel the sign as proposed was in keeping with the
intent of._the zoning of the area.
Fahey asked if there was anyone from the general public wishing to
comment on this proposal.
There was no one present wishing to comment.
Page -2-
