MINUTES
City Council
March 9, 1988
Davison asked what the City would pursue at Capitol View besides
the pool that is not available at the Middle School. Davison asked
if facilities are scarce because the City is competint~ with Roseville
for~ use of facilities.
Fahey stated that the City has to consider~ whether~ a full-sized gym
is needed.
Collova pointed out that the City of Roseville needs gym space.
Scalze pointed out that the City of Little C~;nada has first choice
of using facilities at the Middle School.
Mor~el an r~epor•ted that the Ci ty i s cur~r~ently usi ng faci 1 iti es at the
P9iddle School two nights per~ week.
Fahey asked if it would be possible to fully utilize the facilities
at the Middle School and not meet the City's needs.
Mor~elan did not believe the City would outgr•ow the facilities at
the Middle School building.
Julie Car•dinal pointed out that the Middle School is not available
5 nights per~ week as ther•e ar•e school activities in the evening also.
Wehr~le stated that he was in favor~ of shar•ed facilities, but was
concer•ned with the differ•ent facilities that have been closed by
the School District. Wehr•le suggested that if the City par•ticipate
in the cost of a full-sized gym onto Little Canada School, ther~e be
an agr•eement that the City could r~etain use of the gym even if the
school wer~e closed. However~, Wehr•le stated that his fir•st pr•efer~ence
was use of facilities at the Middle School.
Fenlon suggested that an agr•eement as outlined by Wehr~le would make
a building unsalable to the School Distr•ict.
Zoch suggested that r~ather~ than consider• an addition onto the
City Center•, the City consider• moving over~ to the Capitol View
site.
Scalze also pointed out the situation in White Qear• and attempts to
fund a pool facility. Scalze also pointed out that the community
center• at Fair•view is not r~eadily available to senior•s in Little
Canada because of the distance involved. Scalze also pointed out
that the bulk of swimming lessons are held at Fairview and the distance
Little Canada r•esidents have to go for• this activity.
Fahey felt that all these issues needed to be addr•essed by the
Cit.y's Recr•eation Committee in mor~e detail. Fahey also pointed out
the joint wor•kshop that would be held tomor•r•ow evening with the
Planning Commission to discuss the possible expansion of the City's
Public zoning to include secondar~y and pr•ivate schools.
Page -6-
