MINUTES
Council and Planning Commission
Mawch 10, 1988
Fahey again stated that his position was to r~etain the pr~oper~ty to
the east and leave it zoned Public. Fahey also stated that if it is
concluded that the inside facilities ar•e not needed, that was fine.
However•, Fahey noted that these options have not been explor~ed by the
School Distr•ict.
P9ary Bakeman, resident of Roseville, reported that she lived in the
Lexington School ar~ea. Bakeman encour•aged the City to consider~ what
is best for Little Canada and not what the School Distr•ict wants.
Bakeman pointed out that the School Distr•ict is not thinking about
the r~esidents of Little Canada, and did not think about the r~esidents
of Roseville evhen consider•ing Lexington School. Bakeman stated that
it was the Council's job to r~epr•esent the community. Bakeman pointed
out that the School District is comprised of parts of seven different
communities. The Council's pr~imar~y focus should be the Little Canada
r•esidents, r•ather• than the School Distr~ict.
Fahey felt that the Council had pr~eser•ved that focus if outside r•ecr~eational
facilities at Capitol View ar•e pr~eser•ved and if a deter~mination is made on
whether• or• not the i nsi de r~ecr•eati onal faci 1 i ti es shoul d be r•etai ned.
Fahey stated that he felt Globe Business College would be a good use
for the City.
blehr•le, Chair~man of the Par•k Commission, pointed out that one of the
r•ecommendations of the Recr~eation Committee which studied the Little
Canada expansion about a year• ago, was not to par•ticipate in the addition
of a gym because ther•e was enough gym space available in the City.
However~, ther•e ar•e no City-owned gym facilities, and the City has no
r•eal say over• how gym facilities will be used at schools. Wehr•le
was concer•ned with the tr~ack r•ecor•d of the School Distr•ict over• the
past few year~s, and pointed out that the Distr•ict does not have a lot
of long-range plans. 4lehrle stated that the City must consider whether~
it will have gyms after• 10 year~s. Wehr•le pointed out that ther•e may
not be a need for gyms now, but the City has to consider the future.
blehrle felt that the City must consider the inside facilities at
Capitol View.
Fahey commented that per•haps the City should take the inside facilities
at Capitol View now, in order to provide for future recreational needs.
Fahey pointed out that the Recr~eation Committee will have to debate
these issues and make a r•ecommendation to the Council. Fahey stated
that r•ight now he is looking for• some str•ong input fr•om the community,
and he is not getting it.
Sander•s stated that he feels the outdoor• space at Capitol View is
needed and is cur~rently being used by the City. Sanders stated that
he would like to see the Capitol View site occupied by St. Ber•nar•d's
as this school offer~s the potential for• r•etention of both the indoor•
and outdoor• facilities for• community use. Sander~s suggested that
the City give St, l~er•nar~d's until May lst to make a decision.
Page -7-
