PIINUTES
City Council
November 2, 1988
John Thein, Roseville Area Schools, appear•ed before the Council and
presented plans of the existing Little Canada Elementary School and
showed the changes that ar•e planned for the existing facilities. These
include enlargement of the librar~y, r~elocation of existing offices to
the new addition, and expansion of the kitchen. An existing classr~oom
at the southwest corner of the building would be cut in half since a
hallway would be added to access to the new addition. The remaining
space would be used as a teacher~s' workroom.
Thein then presented a drawing of the new addition pointing out the
proposed main entrance on the north side of the building with the
driveway at the front of the building. This driveway would be used
for loading and unloading of buses, and includes some par•king ar•ea
for~ par•ents dr•oppi ng off students, etc.
Thein described the lay-out of the new addition pointing out classroom
areas, the proposed gymnasium, etc.
Fahey asked the height of the gymnasium.
Thein was unsur•e, but repor•ted that the gym would be regulation-sized.
Thein then descr~ibed the facade of the new addition, which would include
a br~ick exter•ior• to match the existing building.
Thein pointed out that the floor plan for~ the addition being consider•ed
by the School District does not include showers or• locker• r•ooms. If
the City wished to participate in the addition by paying for shower~s and
locker~ r~ooms, these could be included. Thein then presented an alter•nate
floor plan showing the addition with showers and locker• rooms.
Thein then r~eviewed the site plan for additional parking on the west
sicle of the building and described this for~ the Council. Thein repor~ted
that the City cur•rently has a 36 space parking lot on the west side of
the building and the School District is pr~oposing to increase this to
84 spaces.
131esener pointed out that not much additional parking is gained by the
looped parking ar•ea pr~oposed on the west side of the school.
Thein agr•eed, but pointed out that the thoughts are that this area would
be used for~ handicapped accessability, as well as brings some par•king
closer to the school. Thein repor•ted that the parking sketches are ver~y
pr•eliminar•y at this time.
Collova was concerned with the elevation of the area and questioned how
the par~king would work.
Jim Mor•elan estimated an 8 foot dr•op in elevation. Morelan asked if the
additional parking was for school use primar~ily.
Thein replied that the school has adequate par~king on the east side of
the building. The additional par~king pr~oposed on the west, would br•ing
Page -2-
