MINUTES
City Council
Nnvember 2, 1988
Scalze asked if the City would be charged for~ use of school facilities.
Thein did not believe so. Thein stated that the School District believes
that the school is a community school and should be available for community
use.
Fahey stated that he discussed with the School Superintendent the
possibility of a lease agreement giving the City use of the school
as long as the building is owned by the School District and used for
school purposes. This use would be at no charge if the City par~ticipated
in the cost of a shower~ or locker• room facility.
Scalze asked if the City would be able to use the gym free-of-charge
if it did not agr~ee to put in showers.
Thein did not know.
Mor~elan r~eported that he has been notified that he will be charged for•
use of school facilities this year.
Fahey stated that he could foresee this possibility and wanted to foreclose
on it. Fahey stated that if the City agrees to install a shower• and
locker r•oom, he wanted assur~ance that the City would receive fir•st
prior•ity for use of these facilities and that the City would. not be
char~ged for• their use. Fahey pointed out that School Boar•ds change as
do their~ policies.
Mor•elan questioned the demand for the use of the gymnasium facilities
proposed at Little Canada School.
Fahey pointed out the City's growing population. Fahey did not think
the City should let the opportunity go by to make full use of the
gymnasium facilities at the Little Canada School. Fahey felt that
such a facility would amount to a community center within the City.
Scalze suggested that the City consider par•ticipating in the cost of
stor~age space at the School that would be used exclusively by the City.
Scalze pointed out the growing gymnastics pr•ogram that the City has and
the need for• storage space for gymnastics equipment.
Scalze asked why the Council was again considering the issue of showers,
when a decision had previously been reached on this issue.
Fahey pointed out that the Council cannot determine what the futur~e
needs of the City are, and felt that the Council wou1d be shor~t-sighted
in not installing showers and locker rooms at this time. Fahey stated
that he would rather participate in this improvement, than spend a
gr•eat deal more money on a community center~ some time in the futur•e.
Blesener agreed.
Morelan pointed out that there is no demand for• showers fr~om youth.
Page -4-
