MINUTES
City Council
November 2, 1988
School Distr•ict wanted to put its available funds into the cost of the
addition, and have the Cit,y bond for• outside improvements and assess
the cost back to the School Distr•ict. Thein repor•ted that the School
Distr•ict wanted to have a school that would look good for the
neighbor•hood and the community.
Collova pointed out that the gymnasium now being pr~oposed is lar•ger• than
the one pr•eviously suggested.
Fahey pointed out that as a condition of site plan approval for the
buildinq addition, the City can r•equire dr~iveways, sidewalks, curbs,
etc. because the Council would not want the addition to be unsightl,y
for the neighborhood.
Fahey stated that he can understand the School Distr•ict's position in
not wanting to go to the voter•s with a r~efer•endum for~ the addition,
and also their~ position about putting available funds into the buildings
and asking the City to bond for outside improvements.
Scalze asked if there wer~e any other elementar•y schools with full-sized
gymnasiums.
Thein r~eplied that ther~e were not in the Roseville School Distr•ict.
Blesener pointed out that the existing gym at the school is 40 feet by
72 feet. The pr•oposed new gym is 90 feet by 56 feet.
Ed Nadeau pointed out that the City already has a facility with showers
that it is using now, however, the shower•s ar•e not being used. Nadeau
stated that he was in favor• of the City's participation in stor•age area
at the Little Canada Elementar~y School. However, felt that if ther~e
is adult usage that r•equires showers, that usage can be scheduled at the
Roseville Middle School.
Jack Fitzger•ald r~eported that the stor~age space was mor•e important to
him than the shower~s.
Fahey asked. if the District would be interested in adding stor•age space
~dithout shower•s.
Thein replied that he was not in a position to answer that question, but
would br~ing it up to the Super•intendent and School Board.
P1or~elan asked if the idea of shower~s came up because of the City
previously addressing this issue.
Thein r•eplied that at this time, the School District has no use for
shower•s at an elementar•y school, however, the Distr•ict is not sur•e what
the future will bring. Thein stated that the School Distr•ict did not
want to be short-sighted in looking to the futur•e.
Scalze suggested that the stor•age space be added where the shower•s and
Page -7-
