PIINUTES
City Council
November~ 9, 1988
Little Scalze asked where the gymnastics equipment could be moved to when the
Canada stage was needed by the School.
El ementar•y
School
Blesener pointed out that in addition to the stor•age room proposed, ther•e
(Cont.) would be storage for mats under the stage ar~ea and the School District
has also indicated that the City could use the mezzanine area over the
stage and storage r~oom for stor•age. Blesener~ r~eported that there is also
a storage area pr•oposed next to the coach's office that could be used
for• stor•age of some equipment, such as the vault, if need be.
Fahey pointed out that the revised plan shows access to the storage room
from the stage ar•ea, while the original plan showed access to the storage
room from the gym floor. Fahey suggested that access fr•om the gym floor
might be pr•eferable.
Scalze questioned. why City staff was not invited to the meeting with the
School District, pointing out that at the Special Council meeting the
Council decided that the staff should work with the School District on
this matter.
Fahey thought that the School District would be happy to meet with City
staff.
Scalze felt it preferable to have City staff give their input than to
continue to have the ar~chitect dr~aw up new plans.
Fahey pointed out that it is not feasible to expect a storage room of
816 square feet for~ the City's gymnastics equipment. Ther•efore, it is
necessary to look at alter•native ways to resolve the pr•oblem.
Scalze asked how much square footage the showers and lockers would take
up, feeling that if the gymnastics pr~ogr~am involved a greater number of
people, it should be given priority over• shower•s and lockers. Scalze
suggested that the issue of shower~s and lockers should be r•ethought.
Fahey questioned the need for 816 square feet of storage if it is possible
to leave the gymnastics equipment in place on the stage 90 to 95% of the
time. Fahey felt it more feasible to pay someone to take the equipment
down a couple of times each year• than to pay for 816 square feet of stor~age
ar~ea. Fahey also pointed out the availability of the mezzanine area for•
storage.
Scalze pointed out that the estimate for showers and lockers is $50,000
and felt the money should be used where it effects the greatest amount
of people.
Blesener r~epor•ted that he has infor•med Jim Mor•elan of the School Distr~ict's
revised plans, and Morelan indicated that the plan could wor~k.
Scalze stated that she did not believe it was good gover•nment for• three
Councilmember~s to meet with the School District and its pr~ofessional staff
without the other• two Councilmember~s being invited to the meeting. Scalze
also indicated that City staff should. have been invited to the meeting as
well.
Page -12-
