MINUTES
Cit,y Council
Jan. 25, 1989
Cel l ul ar• One
(Cont.)
Swanson asked if the matter had been put out for bid.
Fahey replied that it had not.
Swanson suggested that the amount of the r•ent the City would receive
should be mor•e than the amount of taxes that wotald be generated on
the size building being proposed.
Fahey pointed out that the City only received 20% of each tax dollar
paid in the City. The r•emainder~ goes to the County and School District.
Swanson stated that he did not believe $600 per month r~ent was enough.
Scalze reported that the amount of rent was based on what Cellular• One
is paying in other communities.
Carr~oway reported that Cellular• One is pa,ying St. Louis Park $575 per•
month for similar equipment.
Swanson repor•ted that a cellular phone was demonstrated at the Planning
Commission meeting, and the reception was good. Swanson stated that he
did not believe there was the need for• a tr~ansmission site within the
City.
Fahey pointed out that Cellular~ One is pr•obably planning for the futur~e
and felt there would be a need in this a.r•ea. Fahey stated that this is
a means of the City obtaining some additional funds and pr•oviding services
of a public nature in a reasonable way. Fahey pointed out that under this
pr~oposal, the impact would be very little on the community and envir~onment.
Swanson asked how thick the walls on the equipment shelter• would be.
Carr~oway r•eplied that they will be
bullet-proof and the build.ing will
pr~otecti on.
4 to 6 inches thick. The walls are
be protected with Haylon fire
Fahey asked if the matter• should be put to bid so that U.S. West has
an oppor•tuni ty to bi d.
Carrowa,y reported that Cellular One is in direct competition with U.S.
West all the time.
Roger~s reported that Cellular One curr•ently has 17 sites and U.S. West
has 16. The location of cell systems depends on a gr•id system which
each company has. Curr•ently the U.S. West gr~id pattern is running about
two miles north of Cellular One's. Rogers reported that there probably
is not a need in the U.S. West system for~ a cell site in this area.
Roger~s also r~epor~ted that the number of cell sites depends on the
number of customers. Each cell site can carry ~45 calls. Rogers
repor•ted that Cellular• One has cell sites in Arden Hills and Oakdale.
page -6-
