MIMUTES
City Council
April ?_6, 1989
Scalze pointed out that cities use the r•ational of the lar•ner• buildinq
bei ng al l owed the hi qher• si gn si nce 1 ar•qer• bui 1 di nqs br•i ng mor•e tax dol 1 ar•s
into the city.
Wilcox pointed out that a lot of cities do not use the criteria of
buildinq size.
Fahey stated that it seems that the City's sic~n or•ciinance is out of touch
with the or•dinances of most cities in the ar~ea. ~ahey felt the City should
be in the main-stream. Fahey felt ther•e should not be a restriction on
business that makes no sense.
3lesener~ questioned why the sign or~dinance was adopted.
Fahey pointed out that the City appr•oached the biasiness community and asked
for an or•dinance that they could live with. Fahey felt that the City never•
put much study or research into the proposal that was submitted by the
business commmunity, but ,iust adopted the ordinance as presented. Fahe.y
pointed out that it has been necessar~y to amend this or~dinance 3 or• 4
times alr~eady. Fahey pointed out that the City is tr•,ying to adver~tise
itself to the business community and attr~act new biasiness. One of the
thinqs the City is str~essinq is its transpor•tation system, hut then the City
r•estr•icts the hei~ht of sians along fr~eeways to 16 feet.
Scalze pointed out that Fahey previously indicated that he did not
feel the proposal submitted by f,onnoco for the property at Centerville
Road and Little Canada Road was a good use of the proper•ty.
Fahey stated that if the Connoco pr~oposal had been appr•oved, he would have
been in favor• of allowina the same siqn height for Connoco as the 76
Station has across the str•eet. Fahey felt that the or~dinance was too
r•estr•ictive.
Scalze r~epor•ted that Slumberland has indicated that they will be cominq
in with a proposal for an addition onto their building, however, were not
willinq to ask for a variance, and would live within the Cit,y's Code.
Fahey pointed out that the Fina people are not askinq for a variance from
the maximum area. This is the type of var•iance that Slumberlanci had
previously requested. Fahey stated that Slumber•land wanted a billboar•d.
Fahey also pointed out that most of the City's freewa.y property had some
pr~obl em, ei ther~ i t was too hi c~h or~ too 1 ow.
Scalze stated that she did not feel that qas stations shoi.ild be sin9led
out as the only businesses to get hinher si~ns alon~ freeways.
Fahey agreed, and stated that it was his feeling that any business along
the fr•eewa,y should be allowed either• a 30 or• 35 foot high sign.
Scalze felt that such sign heiqht would be out-of-line with what is
allowed in the area.
Paqe -20-
