MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
NOVEMBER 22, 1989
With regard to LaValle's comments about license
applications that have been denied by the State for the
Lions Club, Wolter indicated that an application was
not approved because the State indicated that the Lions
owed it some money. That amount was disputed by the
Lions Club, and once the dispute was settled the
application was approved. Wolter stated that the Lions
views this as a difference in an application not being
approved versus denied.
Fahey felt that there were too many questions and
unexplained matters that would allow him to vote
favorably on any gambling license application submitted
by the Lions Club.
Scalze stated that she had problems supporting a
charitable gambling application submitted by the Lions
Club as well. Scalze asked why the application
submitted this evening had the names of two officers
crossed out and other names hand-written in.
Wolter explained that the Lions CLub changed its
officers on July 1, 1989, and the application reflects
the change.
Scalze asked why Wolter was present this evening and
not one of the Club's officers.
Wolter explained that the officers had other
commitments this evening, and he was representing the
Lions as a member of the Club.
LaValle stated that he has no problem with the Lions
Club being allowed to conduct a gold plate dinner, but
stated that the Club should tighten up its reins so
that more members know what is going on with charitable
gambling.
Wolter stated that he will dig into the issue of how
the change in license classification came about.
Ray Hanson asked what procedure the Canadian Days
Committee should follow with regard to charitable
gambling at Canadian Days.
Blesener replied that the State Gambling Control Board
can answer any questions that the Canadian Days
Committee might have.
Page 20
