MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
JUNE 12, 1990
more incidents. First ring suburbs will have more
incidents because of traffic traveling through those
suburbs as well as due to the commercial development
which exists within a city. Scalze felt that
incidents occurrinq in Little Canada were not just a
Little Canada problem, but rather a north suburban
problem.
The Administrator pointed out the letter received from
the City of Vadnais Heiqhts detailing what they believe
their policing needs to be. The Administrator also
reported that Commander Bergeron is recommending that
Little Canada have one deputy assigned to the City a
portion of the day with a shared-deputy between the
hours of 6 A.M. and 2 P.M. Currently the City has
24-hour per day coverage. We also benefit from a
County squad which is available through the service
area.
LaValle suggested that there may be options that Little
Canada and Vadnais Heights could look to reduce costs
similar to what Arden Hills has done.
Scalze was concerned that when Falcon Heights decided
to contract with the City of Roseville for police
protection, the Sheriff's Department approached Falcon
Heights with an offer to negotiate.
Fahey was concerned that the proposed 1991 police
protection budget for the City of Vadnais Heights was
$31,000 less than Little Canada's even though that City
has more area than Little Canada.
Scalze stated that she had no problem negotiating with
Maplewood or Roseville. Scalze pointed out that the
City can take its current contract with the Sheriff's
Department and qive it to these cities and ask how much
it will cost for them to provide the same services.
Scalze pointed out that Ramsey County has tremendous
overhead costs that are being passed on.
Fahey stated that he would write a letter to the cities
contracting with the Ramsey County Sheriff's Department
and inform them that the City is not happy with the new
formula and is exploring other options at this time and
cannot commit to the 1991 Sheriff's Contract.
Scalze reported that the Ramsey County League will be
holdinq a program on this subject on August 15th at the
North St. Paul City Aall. Scalze stated that Little
Canada is not the only city with questions on this
issue.
Page 19
