MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
AUGUST 8, 1990
of the Sheriff's Department that the Department respond
to worthless document calls provided certain criteria
area met. The upgraded criteria will also ensure that
prosecution is successful. This criteria was reviewed
by Gary and includes a$50 minimum on the worthless
document.
The City Attorney informed the Council that most
municipalities have adopted the policy changes
proposed.
Scalze asked if there were other policy changes the
Sheriff's Department could propose that would help keep
down policing costs.
Bergeron reported that the Sheriff's Department has
already adopted the policy of not responding to
lock-outs unless it is an emergency situation, such as
a child locked in a car.
Gary reported that if the Council adopts the policy
changes as proposed, a copy of the changes will be
given to the City Attorney's office as well as the
business community.
There was a consensus of the Council to adopt the
policy change for worthless documents as outlined by
the Sheriff's Department. Council agreed that this
policy change will allow better use of the Sheriff
Department's time. The new policy will go into effect
September lst.
Gary then reviewed the proposed policy change with
regard to gas station drive-offs, reporting that the
Sheriff's Department has found that the majority of the
drive-offs are for less than $25. Gary reviewed the
details of his report dated July 27th outlining the
criteria that must be met in order for the Sheriff's
Department to respond to these calls. This criteria
includes that the gas station attendant know the exact
dollar amount of gasoline taken, have the license plate
number and a physical description of the vehicle and
specific ID information on the suspect.
Fahey suggested that the Crime Prevention Officer being
proposed by the Sheriff's Department could be useful to
area businesses to educate them in ways to try and
prevent drive-offs.
It was the concensus of the Council to adopt the policy
change for gas drive-offs as proposed by the Sheriff's
Page 16
