MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
AUGUST 8, 1990
establishing this new position which are listed on page
6 of the Sheriff Department's report.
Fahey asked the feelings of the other contracting
cities to this proposal.
The City Administrator reported that all the cities
support the concept, including Little Canada.
Scalze agreed with the concept, but pointed out the
high tax situation in Little Canada.
Fahey suggested that the cost would be justified and
that the additional $6,000 for 1991 could be taken from
the capital improvement budget. Fahey suggested that
as part of the 1991 budgeting process, parks will
probably have a low priority.
Scalze did not feel the park system should bear the
entire cost.
Fahey pointed out that Little Canada needs to qet its
events down and education of the public might be one
way to do this. Fahey questioned how effective a
police department could be if it is not doing something
to prevent crime.
LaValle asked if there were any areas in the City where
calls are excessive.
Bergeron reported that there is one establishment in
the City that had 57 calls in the first six months of
1990. Bergeron suggested that some action by the City
may help reduce the number of calls at this
establishment.
Scalze pointed out that in the past the City has made
special requirements of businesses in order to reduce
the number of police calls.
Council suggested that numbers of police calls be a
criteria that is reviewed at the time of liquor license
renewals. The Council also requested that the
Sheriff's Department keep the City Administrator
informed of problem areas within the City.
Fahey suggested that as public safety liaison he will
study the issue with Commander Bergeron and the City
Administrator and a recommendation will be presented to
the Council.
Page 18
