MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
OCTOBER 30, 1990
Fahey suggested that if there are anticipated uses of
the building, the Council needs to determine how the
building should be used and by whom. Fahey noted that
the Fire Department has a lease on the building until
1995, and with the lease goes the responsibility of
maintenance of the building.
The Council discussed the use of the old Fire Station
by the 55+ Club, pointing out that the downstairs
facilities would be well-suited to this use and that
there is access to the lower level at the rear of the
building that did not involve stairs. However, Council
was concerned whether or not the City would have to
make the building handicapped accessible.
The Building Inspector reported that if the building
were sold or major remodeling done, it would have to
meet handicapped accessible regulations.
LaValle asked if the State has set a date whereby
public buildings have to meet these regulations.
The Building Inspector replied that there was no such
date. The Inspector again stated that handicapped
accessibility regulations only have to be met if there
is a major remodeling of a premises or if ownership
changes.
Fahey asked if Public Works could use the fire station
for equipment storage.
The Public Works Superintendent replied that Public
Works could use additional cold storage space pointing
out that existing cold storage areas such as the bottom
of the water tower are full.
Fahey asked the Council's opinion on retaining the old
fire station building.
Collova felt the City should retain the building
pointing out the many potential uses for it as well as
the fact that the building is paid for.
It was pointed out that there are some underground fuel
tanks at the site that will have to be removed
Page 2
