MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
OCTOBER 30, 1990
eventually. However, the Fire Chief indicated that the
Fire Department would like to continue using these
tanks as long as possible.
The Fire Chief also pointed out that one of the
benefits that has always been offered to members of the
Fire Department is the use of the basement facilities
for social events. The Chief also pointed out that the
City has designated the basement of the Fire Station as
an emergency services shelter.
The Fire Chief pointed out that the Fire Department
already handles the scheduling and custodian services
for the basement of the Fire Station, and could
continue to do so. The Fire Chief indicated that if
there are other groups using the basement facilities,
these facilities could be scheduled on a first-come,
first-served basis.
Blesener felt that with the many organizations that
want to use the Fire Station, it would be a mistake to
sell the building. Blesener felt the City had time to
address who will be allowed the use of the building
between now and the time the Fire Department moves.
Scalze stated that the City will have to establish a
policy for use of the building.
Fahey suggested that members of the Fire Department
should be given first priority for use of the
downstairs facilities, with other organizations allowed
to use it subject to scheduling and maintenance. Fahey
pointed out that the building was built by the Fire
Department and given to the City.
Blesener and Scalze commented that they did not feel
the City should go into the business of operating a
commercial rental hall, with Scalze feeling that the
same applied for the use of the new Council Chambers.
Scalze felt that there will be pressure to open up
these facilities for broader public use.
The Council discussed the need for charging a user fee
to cover the costs of maintenance and clean-up.
Blesener suggested that a committee be formed to make a
recommendation on which organizations should be allowed
use of the Fire Department building, as well as the
details of how it will work. Blesener pointed out that
there is agreement that the City should not sell the
building, however, the details of use of the building
need to be worked out.
Page 3
