MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
OCTOBER 30, 1990
Scalze felt that there are currently some organizations
using the City Center which she was not convinced
should be using the building. Scalze stated that if
the City continues to allow these uses, it will be
hard-pressed to deny the use of the City Center by
similar organizations.
Council discussed the use of the Fire Department by the
55+ Club, asking how this organization differed from
those that Scalze had raised concern about.
Johanna Meath, Senior Citizen Coordinator, pointed out
that the 55+ Club is the City's senior group, and that
most cities have similar groups. Meath further
reported that there is also the North Suburban
Community Chorus that is affiliated with the 55+ Club
that is currently practicing at Fairview, and which
would like the use of the Fire Station for practices.
About half the members of the Chorus also belong to the
55+ Club.
Scalze suggested that a good guildeline to follow would
be that any organization that falls under the City's
budgetary process would be an organization allowed the
use of both the Fire Station and City Center buildings.
Fahey felt that no organization should be allowed the
use of the Council Chambers, but rather conference
areas.
Collova pointed out that the buildings are public
buildings, and he felt it was a waste of money if these
buildings are not used.
Blesener agreed that a good start would be allowing use
by City-funded organizations, however, the entire
Council agreed that this would not exclude the Little
Canada Recreation Association.
The City Administrator suggested that any non-profit
group be allow use of City facilities, however, further
suggested that groups be prioritized. The
Administrator also suggested that some type of clean-up
charge may be necessary.
Fahey suggested that the City might be better off to
continue to allow the Fire Department to schedule the
downstairs facilities at the Fire Station. Aowever,
the use of these facilities as a storm shelter must be
continued.
The Fire Chief agreed that the storm shelter use would
take all priority.
Page 4
