MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
FEBRUARY 24, 1993
Scalze did not believe the cost of the access mattered
since she did not feel the Centerville Road parking lot
should be expanded without providing for a second
access point.
Sanders indicated that this was the feeling of the Park
Commission.
Scalze pointed out that Pioneer Park is a multiple use
park and it appears that what has happened is that the
auto-oriented components of the picture have increased.
Scalze felt that Pioneer Park cannot be considered just
a softball park.
Sanders reported that the Park Commission feels that
additional parking is needed on both sides of the park
eventually, and that increasing the parking on the
DeSoto Street side is the most economical alternative
at this point.
LaValle felt that the passive areas of the park should
be developed before additional parking is improvement.
Once the passive areas are developed, whether or not
there is a need for additional parking can be
determined. LaValle felt that the park was not being
utilized to its full potential because it is not
developed as yet. LaValle stated that it was his
understanding that the park was being developed for use
by Little Canada citizens and families, but indicated
that it is not being developed that way. Again,
LaValle felt that the park needs to be fully developed
before additional parking is added. LaValle stated
that he could not justify spending $44,000 to add
parking because there is a parking problem for adult
softball. LaValle suggested that this money be put
into picnic shelters.
Scalze indicated that the Mayor indicated that this is
where he stands on the issue.
Pedersen pointed out that to expand the parking on the
DeSoto Street side would cost $19,000, and that current
usage of the park would justify the need for the
parkinq addition.
LaValle pointed out that it is adult softball that is
causing the need for the additional parking.
Morelan indicated that there are many youth activities
at the park as well. Morelan felt that the City needed
to provide adequate parkinq for the ballfields,
otherwise the fields should not have been built.
Page 8
