MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
MARCH 10, 1993
fee to the water main.
The Administrator reported that the City had a
connection fee which would have to be paid as well as
the cost of hiring a contractor to connect from the
water main service to the house.
The City Engineer reported that there are existing
residents in the City who maintain their wells for
outdoor usage while being connected to City water main
for indoor usage. The Engineer did not anticipate a
change to this unless the Legislature would disallow
it. The Engineer also reported that there are matching
grant monies available for capping abandoned wells.
The Engineer estimated that it would cost between $600
and $1,000 to connect a house to water main.
Martha Gustafson, 635 E. Viking Drive, reported that
everyone on the street needs water main since they are
all having problems with their water.
Pedersen asked if there were filtration systems that
could be purchased to improve the homeowners'
situations.
Sprain reported that she checked into this and the cost
would run about $4,000. Sprain pointed out that they
would be faced with the ongoing maintenance of the
equipment as well. It was also pointed out that the
residents not only have the poor water quality to deal
with now, but also the effect of this water on their
appliances and fixtures.
Pedersen asked if the water had been tested for
pollutants.
Rector suggested that the City discuss with Archie
Ducharme, a local well-driller, what is happening with
the shales in the last 50 years.
Gustafson suggested that water main should have been
installed on Viking Drive when it was put in on County
Road B-2 a few years ago.
Scalze believed that this was not done due to the
economics.
Hanson pointed out that it appears the majority of the
property owners are in favor of water main, the issue
is the dollars and cents.
Rector reported that he owns a vacant lot on Viking
Drive, and would not vote one way or the other on the
issue.
Page 5
