Minutes
City Council
April 7, 1993
Morelan asked if, based on the Council's discussions at the
last meeting pertaining to Costa Lane, what they really want
is a 30 foot section with surmountable curb. The Engineer
stated it would be 28 feet face to face and 30 feet back to
back. The Engineer indicated that in most street
reconstructions, the areas are already developed and B618
curb would be installed and be measured face to face. He
stated that in new developments throughout the City,
surmountable curb will be installed since they do not know
where the driveways will be until the homes are built.
The Engineer stated that Vanderbie will be B618 curb all the
way up to the new development where there are eight to ten
new lots; then there will be surmountable curb for the new
lots on the west side. On the east side there will be B618
all the way.
Pedersen asked if B618 was installed all the way up on both
sides, could they come back and knock out where the
driveways would be so the street would look uniform. The
Engineer stated that what he has proposed does not look bad
and is not unusual to do. Hanson felt that some of the
older homes in that area may desire the surmountable curb.
Scalze stated that surmountable was installed on Morrison
and Savage.
The Engineer stated that they prefer to install the B618 to
keep cars on the street instead of jumping up onto the
boulevard. Also, more water can be carried on a B618 curb.
Scalze asked if the intent was to keep cars from jumping the
curb, why wouldn't B618 be installed all over the City and
even in new developments. The Engineer stated that the
primary intent for curb and gutter is to carry water and
that the location of driveways is unknown in new
developments making surmountable more desireable in new
developments.
Scalze asked what the difference in price was between B618
and surmountable curb. The Engineer stated that it is
usually a quarter or fifty cents a foot. Pedersen stated
that his surmountable curb is very steep and Westwinds is
very shallow. The Engineer stated that they use four inch
surmountable curb which is easy to access. He stated that
in the past, six inch surmountable had been used and
problems did exist with it. The Engineer stated that the
Building Inspector likes to see a driveway slope of 2-6%.
He stated that if the slope exceeds the 60, it is too steep
and there is a possibility of bottoming out with a car.
-3-
