Minutes
City Council
April 7, 1993
The City Administrator stated that based on current bid
prices, there is a difference of eighty cents a foot when
all costs are assessed. Scalze asked what the price would
be on the surmountable curb. The Administrator stated that
the price would be approximately $5.43 a foot.
Mayor Hanson asked what the width specifications for Costa
Lane were. The Engineer stated that Costa Lane was
initially set at 32 feet back to back which would be 30 feet
face to face. Therefore, now they are looking at decreasing
it to 28 feet face to face.
Pedersen stated that many of the new roads are measured at
30 feet. Therefore, if the Council approves making the
roads 28 feet, the new roads would be two feet smaller than
what the other new roads have been. Mayor Hanson felt that
the Council must look at where Costa Lane comes from and
goes to. Pedersen stated that many of the existing 30 foot
streets are roads that go nowhere. He stated that he was
under the impression that many of those existing streets
were 28 feet and now that he has the new information stating
that they measure 30 feet, he is not sure if it would be
wise for the City to decrease new streets by two feet.
The Engineer stated that he is comfortable with what was
decided at the last meeting. However, he did not feel the
Council should approve anything less than 28 feet as a
standard throughout the City. He stated that if there was a
dead end street with little access and no parking on either
side, a 26 foot street could be used.
LaValle felt that the 28, 30 and 32 foot streets which were
discussed at the last meeting should be the minimums for the
City. The Engineer stated that what was decided previously
was very workable even though it has been narrowed
somewhat. LaValle asked if there would be a reduction in
the contract as a result of this. The Engineer stated that
there would be some savings due to less quantities of
materials needed.
Scalze stated that she did not know why the Council would
want Allen west to be so much wider than Allen east. The
Administrator pointed out that fewer houses front Allen east
as compared to Allen west. Therefore, he felt that a wider
road may be needed on Allen west since there would be more
cars parking on the street with the potential for a lot of
cars to travel on this piece of road due to the park and
future development. Scalze did not feel that Allen west
-5-
