MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
JUNE 23, 1993
signs and feel if they could have a bigger sign they
would make more money. Pedersen felt that the Council
had no choice but to deny the variance application
since the hardship criteria was not met.
LaValle felt that the City needed to study the sign
ordinances of surrounding cities and compare it with
Little Canada's ordinance.
Scalze suggested that City staff obtain copies of the
sign ordinances from the surrounding cities. Scalze
recommended that the City Planner then compare the
requirements of these cities with Little Canada's and
that comparison be reviewed by the Planning Commission.
Pedersen pointed out to the applicant that a review of
the City's sign ordinance could be a 3 or 4 month
process, therefore, the applicant may wish to proceed
with his signage rather than wait to see if an
amendment will be made to the Code.
Morelan stated that he would like to see Little Canada
businesses given the same opportunities as Roseville
businesses along Rice Street.
There was no one else from the general public present
wishing to comment on this matter.
Upon motion by Scalze, seconded by Pedersen, the public
hearing was closed.
Mrs. Scalze introduced the following resolution and
moved its adoption:
RESOLUTION NO. 93-6-185 - DENYING THE APPLICATION FOR
SIGN HEIGHT VARIANCE AS REQUESTED BY MR. TOM VOGT, GAS
N GO SUPERETTE, BASED ON THE RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE
PLANNING COMMISSION AND CITY PLANNER THAT NO REASONS
EXIST TO JUSTIFY THE GRANTING OF A VARIANCE AS STATED
IN THE CODE
The foregoing resolution was duly seconded by Pedersen.
Ayes (5) Scalze, Pedersen, Hanson, LaValle, Morelan.
Nays (0). Resolution declared adopted.
Scalze expressed some concern with the Planner spending
a great deal of time reviewing the ordinances of
surrounding cities.
LaValle pointed out that the Council wants to bring
businesses into Little Canada, and stated that he did
not have a problem spending some money on this review
if it would benefit Little Canada business.
Page 5
