MINUTE5
CITY COUNCIL
JULY 14, 1993
USE OF CITY
CENTER BY
BRIDGE CLUB
The foregoing resolution was duly seconded by Scalze.
Ayes (5) Morelan, Scalze, Hanson, Pedersen, LaValle
Nays (0). Resolution declared adopted.
Council reviewed the request of Johanna Meath for use
of the Council Chambers by a senior citizen bridge
club.
The City Administrator indicated that the issue is
whether or not this is an appropriate use at the City
Center, or if the use would be better located at the
old fire station. The Administrator pointed out that
currently there is a TOPS Club and Snowmobile Club
using the City Center.
Scalze suggested that the bridge club would be an
appropriate use of the City Center given that TOPS and
the Snowmobile Club are already using the facility.
Scalze pointed out that the bridge club is not
City-sponsored but an independent group just like TOPS
and the Snowmobile Club. Scalze believed that the
group should be allowed to use the City Center until
such time as a policy for its use is developed.
LaValle asked how many members of the group were City
residents.
Scalze was not sure, but pointed out that there are
many members of the Snowmobile Club who are not City
residents.
Hanson asked the hours that the group would be usinq
the Council Chambers.
The City Administrator replied that the group would
meet during day-time hours. The Administrator did not
see a problem with this given that the Council Chambers
is rarely used during normal business hours. However,
if the need arose for its use, City business would take
precedent over the bridge club's use. The
Administrator reported that there are 26 names on the
list of bridge club members that has been submitted,
and it appears that the majority are Little Canada
residents.
LaValle stated that he did not have a problem with the
request, but indicated that he had assumed that groups
such as the Snowmobile Club were charged for the use of
City facilities.
Scalze felt that whoever uses City facilities for
meeting rooms should be charged for the use.
