MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
JULY 14, 1993
Pedersen asked if inembers of the Fire Department were
working with City staff to get fire inspections
completed.
The City Administrator reported that the fire
inspection program is not yet underway.
Morelan reported that there are very few buildings
within the City which are sprinkled. Since sprinklinq
is very expensive, his initial recommendation is that
the City target the larger businesses and primarily
multiple-family housing.
Scalze pointed out the public outcry in the City when
Appendix E was adopted.
Pedersen indicated that the expense of sprinkling an
existing building would be very high.
Morelan pointed out the added benefit of reduced
insurance premiums.
Hanson asked that an inventory of unsprinkled buildings
be put together, including multiple-family dwellings.
Morelan suggested that perhaps staff, including the
City Administrator, Fire Chief, Building Inspector, and
City Attorney, should meetinq on this issue. Morelan
suggested that the City determine what other cities are
doing along these lines.
Scalze felt that before the City gets into this issue
too deeply, staff should determine what other cities
are doing and talk to some contractors about it.
It was determined that City staff would put together an
inventory of commercial and multiple-family dwellings
that are not sprinkled; determine what other cities are
doing with Appendix E and retrofitting; determine some
rough cost estimates for retrofitting; discuss the
issue with a representative the the multi-family
housing community; and determine the cost savings on
insurance to a property owner whose building is
retrofitted.
SEALCOATING The City Administrator reviewed the recommendation of
BIDS the Public Works Superintendent to award the low bid of
Allied Blacktop at $.349 per square yard for 1993
sealcoating work.
Page 15
