MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
SEPTEMBER 30, 1993
Fire Marshal also explained that the new fire
inspecting program being established would involve a
temporary inspector to help inspect existing businesses
and apartments. The Fire Marshal indicated that one of
the biggest features of the new inspection would be
that after an inspection is completed and all
requirements met, the business or apartment complex
will be issued a certificate of occupancy. The Fire
Marshal indicated that he has been doing on-going fire
inspections, but has never issued a certificate of
occupancy in the past after inspections have been
completed.
Pedersen pointed out the previous estimate of 160
commercial sites in the City, and asked how many of
these sites were inspected during 1993.
The Fire Marshal replied that he had documented
inspections for 20 of these sites this year under the
new program. These inspections have been completed
since the end of June.
Scalze asked how many fire inspections had been done
during 1993.
The Fire Marshal estimated an additional 20 inspections
prior to enactment of the new fire inspection program,
and indicated that this would exclude on-going
inspections at St. Judes and Presbyterian Homes. A
total of 160 inspections have been done during 1993.
Pedersen commented that it was his understanding that
no fire inspections of businesses were occurring and
that was why the new inspection program was needed.
The Fire Marshal indicated that he has always done the
inspections, but that they had not been documented in
the past. Since the new inspection program was
initiated, a checklist was developed for documentation
of inspections. The Fire Department has asked for this
documentation so that they have a record of
inspections. The Fire Department and City has also
asked that inspections of all businesses and apartments
be completed by the end of 1994.
Scalze asked of the 160 inspections that were done in
1993, how many different businesses were involved.
The Fire Marshal replied that 20 different businesses
were involved.
Morelan pointed out that the 160 visits involved 240
hours, which is about 1 1/2 hours per visit.
Page 11
