MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
SEPTEMBER 30, 1993
City staff, and it is expecting a lot of the volunteer
Canadian Days Committee to handle this coordination.
Hanson reported that the Sheriff's Department has
requested better coordination of the timing of these
celebrations between the contracting cities.
Bill Bruce, President of Canadian Days, reported that
the Committee has asked that he respond to some
comments which were made previously. The first had to
do with the Committee holding fund-raisers to pay the
cost of fire works. Bruce reported that Canadian Days
does conduct several fund-raisers, which include
selling sweatshirts, annual softball tournament, 5K
run. Canadian Days has also solicited donations from
local businesses and charities. Bruce reported that
the Little Canada Fire Department donated $500 towards
Canadian Days, but in approachinq a charitable
organization in the City was told that they donate to
the City's 10% fund and that the City should support
Canadian Days from that fund.
Bruce reported that in 1992 some events were cut from
Canadian Days due to lack of funds and the Committee's
desire not to approach the City for additional funding.
Some of these events included the corn feed, carnival
and fire works. During 1993 the Committee wanted to
bring events back, and it was felt the carnival should
be added rather than the fire works, since the carnival
will attract more people who in turn would patronize
the vendors.
Bruce reported that the Canadian Days Committee is not
lobbying the City for more money, but wanted to point
out the huge volunteer effort that takes place to put
on the celebration and the fact that the Committee does
the City a service. Bruce felt the Committee should be
acknowledged and there should be some discussion about
the role of the City in this event.
Morelan pointed out that the City has designated the
10% gambling monies it collects to be used for the
capital improvement projects, of which Canadian Days
does not qualify. Morelan asked if the additional
$1,500 budgeted under Canadian Days was budgeted in
anticipation of hiring a coordinator.
The City Administrator reported that the time
commitment on the part of the Canadian Days Committee
chair is substantial and there is the need to make the
event more efficient from the City's standpoint. A
couple of years ago a Coordinator was hired, but while
some things were accomplished through this position,
Page 21
