MINiITES
CITY COUNCIL
J7~NUARY 26, 1994
residents in the area is the level of traffic speeds.
The Sheriff's Department's traffic deputy did not
detect excessive speeds at the intersection for the few
hours that it was monitored.
The Administrator pointed out the Sheriff's
Department's purchase of the smart van, and suggested
that this piece of equipment could be used in this area
to gather information to present to the County in
support of the residents' request. It will be 4 to 8
weeks before the smart van is delivered, however. The
Administrator also pointed out that there this
equipment is to be shared between 6 cities. The
Administrator reported that the request for a 3-way
stop sign at this particular location might not be
successful without supporting data.
Dean Aedlund, 655 Keller Parkway, did not believe the
smart van would obtain accurate traffic speed
statistics since drivers with radar detectors in their
vehicles will slow down. Hedlund reported that he has
discussed the issue with Mr. Solar, who has indicated
that a stop sign does not reduce traffic speeds.
Hedlund disagreed. Hedlund reported that the residents
would not be making this request if drivers were
traveling at 30 or 35 miles per hour. Hedlund reported
that some drivers are going 40 to 60 miles per hour.
Hedlund pointed out that the lake is heavily used by
walkers, joggers, and children. The road around the
lake is narrow and the particular area being discussed
is the worst since it is a straight-away resulting in
drivers increasing their speeds. Hedlund also pointed
out that there is a school bus stop at this particular
intersection, and he is worried about the safety of the
children using the bus stop.
Chris Cardinal pointed out that the residents are only
askinq the City Council to forward their request on to
the County. Cardinal agreed that the situation was
dangerous, pointing out that after school children in
the area are dropped off the bus stop at Edgerton and
Keller Parkway, and have to walk along the narrow road
to their homes. Cardinal pointed out that the
residents are only requesting a stop sign. Cardinal
indicated that he would not tolerate traffic speeds of
50 miles per hour and greater on Keller Parkway.
It was the consensus of the Council to utilize the
smart van to gather supporting data to forward to the
County along with the residents' petition for 3-way
stop sign at Keller Parkway and Lakeside Court.
Page 15
