MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
JANUARY 26, 1494
It was pointed out that it would take four affirmative
votes of the Council to pass a variance request.
Without consensus of those Council Members present this
evening, the Council felt the matter should be tabled
until the full Council is present.
Hanson reported that he was in favor of the variance
request, feeling that the City should make efforts to
help retain its existing businesses.
There was no one else present from the general public
wishing to comment on this matter.
Upon motion by Morelan, seconded by Pedersen, the
public hearing was closed.
Morelan pointed out that the request before the Council
is for retention of the two existing pylons at The
Market Place Shopping Center. Morelan asked if a new
application would have to be submitted for one pylon
which would exceed sign area limitations. Morelan also
disagreed with the Planner's comments about signage not
attracting customers. Morelan pointed out that he
travels frequently and relies heavily on signage when
he is out-of-town to locate the restaurants and other
businesses.
Hanson indicated that he was not worried about settinq
a precedent by granting the variance to allow one pylon
sign that exceeds sign area minimums.
The City Attorney reported that it was his reaction
that another public hearing would have to be processed
for the variance request for one pylon that exceeded
area minimums. The public hearing held this evening
was to allow a CUP for second free-standing sign as
well as Variance to allow both free-standinq signs on
one street frontage.
The City Administrator stated that the additional costs
for processing the public hearing for sign area
variance would be minimal, requiring a published notice
and notices to property owners within 350 feet. The
public hearing would be held by the City Council. The
matter would not need to go back through the Planning
Commission process, since the variance request is a
result of the Planning Commission's recommendation.
Chazin pointed out that another public hearing would
not delay The Market Place since they were not
anticipatinq that construction of the new sign would
begin for two or three months.
Page 6
