MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
MAY 11, 1994
County's strategic planning process, as well as provide
a recommendation for committee nominations.
PATH ON Morelan reported that after the last Council meeting
LAKESHORE/ he looked at the proposed pedestrian plan reviewing
OLD COUNTY the more heavily-traveled streets in the City. Morelan
ROAD C felt that if there was adequate area to do so on
heavily-traveled streets, pedestrian/bike traffic
should be off-street. Morelan pointed out that there
is no sidewalk along Old County Road C and the south
end of Lakeshore Avenue. Morelan felt that given the
number of vehicles that use these streets, it is
important that the City provide sidewalks for
pedestrians and bikers to get them out of the road.
Hanson stated that he had no objection from a safety
standpoint. He has looked at the area, but was not
sure of the amount of right-of-way for these streets.
Hanson stated that he supported the idea from a safety
standpoint.
Morelan pointed out that the Engineer is beginning work
on plans and specs for the improvement of these roads,
and suggested that at the same time he determine if a
sidewalk improvement along Old County Road C and
Lakeshore Avenue was feasible.
Scalze reported that when the Jackson Street trail
easement was being planned it was thought that it would
be better to get pedestrians away from the two
dangerous corners at Jackson/Old County Road C and Old
County Road C/Lakeshore. Scalze pointed out that the
City already has the trail easement along Jackson
Street and the railroad tracks up to Australian Avenue.
Morelan felt there was a difference between a sidewalk
and trail system. A sidewalk would serve the residents
of the area living on the street giving them a safe way
to walk from their homes to the convenience store in
the area. Morelan pointed out that there would be 27
homes impacted by a sidewalk improvement along old
County Road C and Lakeshore.
Scalze asked if the residents would be assessed for the
sidewalk improvement.
Morelan replied that the entire City would be assessed.
6
