MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
MAY 25, 1994
COSTS Costs.
Pedersen asked if it would be less expensive to widen a
road by 4 feet to provide a shoulder for pedestrian
traffic than it would be to construct an 8-foot
pathway.
LaValle pointed out that according to the City
Engineer's estimate, it will cost $90,000 to $100,000
more to construct a 5 or 6 foot concrete sidewalk along
Lakeshore and Old County Road C.
The Administrator stated that it would cost an
additional $80,000 to $86,000 more no matter what type
of trail or sidewalk improvement is made. The
Administrator noted that the Engineer is not sure which
side of Lakeshore/Old County Road C would make the most
sense for the improvement. The Engineer's figures are
only estimates at this point.
Morelan felt that give the amount of traffic in the
area, both pedestrian and vehicular, he felt the
pedestrian traffic must be addressed. When that is
done with a separate sidewalk or an enlarged road, he
was not sure.
Scalze stated that she thought the pedestrian traffic
was being addressed by extending the Jackson Street
trail easement.
Morelan did not feel that helped the property owners
along Lakeshore, Old County Road C, Bluwood, or
Australian. Morelan pointed out the substantial
traffic in the area.
Rocky Waite stated that he would not mind seeing a
sidewalk improvement along Lakeshore and Old County
Road C, but felt that an improvement on his side of the
street would cause him to lose some substantial oak
trees. Waite did not feel the sidewalk could be on the
other side of the street since the guardrail protecting
his neighbor's house would have to be removed. Waite
also stated that he did not wish to be responsible for
shoveling 300 feet of sidewalk. Waite stated that he
did not move to Little Canada so that his neighborhood
could look like a Minneapolis neighborhood. Waite did
not believe his property would gain any value from a
25
