MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
OCTOBER 12, 1994
on fire prevention. During Fire Prevention Week, these
educational efforts intensify.
Sabean also reported on the Fire Department's smoke
detector program, notinq that over 850 detectors have
been distributed, many installed by the fire fighters,
and batteries tested and replaced. These detectors are
available throughout the year to any citizens in need
of one. Citizens need to call either City Hall or the
Fire Department and request a smoke detector.
Sabean reported that as part of Fire Prevention Week,
the Fire Department will be hosting an Open House on
Sunday, October 16th, from Noon to 3 P.M. Smoke
detectors will be given away, tours of the fire station
conducted, and fire truck rides provided for children.
Sabean reported that the theme of Fire Prevention Week
this year is "Test Your Detector for Life". Sabean
reported that smoke detectors do save lives, and it is
important to check the batteries in these detectors.
5abean also reported that parents should have a fire
safety plan which should be reviewed with children.
Both a meeting place and alternate exit should be
established with the entire family. Children should be
taught the importance of staying low during a fire,
testing to make sure doors are not hot or warm before
opening them, if clothes start on fire to stop, drop
and roll, as well as taught not to pull a fire alarm
unless there is an actual fire. There is an article in
the current issue of the Little Canada Press outlining
these safety tips.
Sabean again reminded everyone of the Fire Department's
Open House on Sunday, October 16th.
Hanson pointed out the many elderly citizens in the
City, and asked what special efforts are being made
towards these citizens in promoting fire prevention.
Sabean reported that the Fire Department has been to
every home in Little Canada as part of its smoke
detector distribution, and will next be focusing on the
elderly housing within the City. Sabean again
encouraged anyone in need of a smoke detector to
contact either City Hall or the Fire Department.
6
