MINi7TES
CITY COUNCIL
DECENiBER 21, 1994
RESOLUTION NO. 94-12-438 - APPROVING THE FIRE
DEPARTMENT LEASE AGREEMENT, QUIT CLAIM DEED, AND
DISPOSITION OF FIRE DEPARTMENT PROPERTY AT THE OLD FIRE
STATION AS SUBMITTED, AND AUTHORIZING TIiE MAYOR AND
CITY ADMINISTRATOR TO EXECUTE THESE DOCUMENTS ON BEHALF
OF THE CITY
The foregoing resolution was duly seconded by Pedersen.
Ayes (5) LaValle, Pedersen, Scalze, Morelan, Hanson.
Nays (0). Resolution declared adopted.
CITY HALL The City Administrator reported that there has been
CHRISTMAS some discussion about lighting of the City Center for
LIGHTING the holiday season. The Administrator suggested that
the City Council discuss this concept.
Scalze stated that while it is nice to be festive, her
reaction is that she does not like to see Christmas
lighting on city halls. This involves a tax
expenditure related to a religious observance, and she
feels a government center should not participate.
Scalze stated that she would support winter wonderland-
type lighting in a park or along a trail, however.
Pedersen pointed out that the downtown areas of large
cities are lit during the Christmas Holidays, however,
he felt this was due to the efforts of businesses and
merchants to attract Christmas shoppers.
Morelan pointed out the City's community pride efforts
and felt that a couple of hundred dollars in Christmas
lights would enhance those efforts and bring the
community closer together. Morelan found it hard to
believe any residents would have a problem with the
concept.
Pedersen felt Christmas lighting from a community pride
standpoint was more appropriate coming from the
business community.
Morelan suggested that the City might have to set the
example and install its own lighting, or suggested that
perhaps the City should sponsor a lighting contest.
Morelan stated that he had hoped to have the City
Center lit this year.
34
