MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
JULY 26, 1995
The City Administrator reported that the standard is 12
feet. However, it was felt that a narrower lane would
cause traffic to slow down. The configuration proposed
is the same as was approved for Keller Parkway. The
Administrator reported that some communities have gone
to 10 foot traffic lanes to control speeds.
Morelan stated that he saw no advantaqe to designating
the shoulders as bike lanes.
Scalze stated that she would be hesitant to designate
shoulders as bike lanes. However, striping a shoulder
will change the appearance of the road, making the
traffic lanes narrower and slowing traffic speeds.
Pedersen suggested that motorists might be more
cautious realizing a bike lane was adjacent to the
road.
The City Administrator suggested that these
possibilities be evaluated prior to the final lift of
bituminous being put on the street next year. In the
meantime, the lanes can be striped at 11 feet with a
double yellow line down the center. The Administrator
stated that he would not recommend posting the area no
parking at this time. That is another issue which
could be re-evaluated in April.
Morelan agreed.
Mr. Morelan introduced the following resolution and
moved its adoption:
RESOLUTION N0. 95-7-181 - DIRECTING STAFF TO HAVE
LAKESHORE/OLD COUNTY ROAD C/JACKSON STREET STRIPED AS
RECOMMENDED BY THE CITY ENGINEER IN HIS JULY 20, 1995
REPORT WITII THE DIRECTION THAT THERE BE NO LABELING OF
SHOULDERS AS BIKE LANES AT THIS TIME
The foregoing resolution was duly seconded by LaValle.
Ayes (4) Morelan, LaValle, Pedersen, Scalze.
Nays (0).
