MINUTE5
CITY COUNCIL
JULY 26, 1995
is not enough parking at Pioneer Park. Scalze also
asked if this lack of adequate parking has been
documented.
Howard Remerowski, Chair of the Park & Recreation
Commission, reported that he has attended two
tournaments at Pioneer Park in the last month. On both
of these occasions there are cars parking along the
Centerville Road parking lot entrance. Cars are being
parked anywhere they can. The parking lots were full,
and the overflow parking areas are being used.
Remerowski pointed out that parking at Pioneer Park has
been addressed on a constant basis. Remerowski felt
that not utilizing Pioneer Park to its full potential
because of a shortage of parking did not make sense.
Remerowski felt that parking could be allowed on both
sides of DeSoto. However, allowing parking on the west
side will provide 25 additional parking spaces.
Remerowski pointed out the high cost of paving
additional parking areas within the park.
Remerowski reported that the property owners at the
meeting expressed their concerns about safety issues
with cars parked along the street, as well as the use
of alcohol in the park. Remerowski felt that if
property owners are observing problems, they should be
calling the Ramsey County Sheriff's Department to
report them.
Remerowski stated that more parking will be needed at
Pioneer Park. The use of the west side of DeSoto
Street will delay the paving of additional spaces
within the park.
Scalze pointed out previous discussion about the
development of the industrial property to the north,
and the possibility of sharing parking with that
development. Scalze stated that when DeSoto Street was
designed, extra width was added to allow parking along
the street for special events in the park.
Remerowski suggested that the parking not be limited to
special events. Remerowski stated that he could not
see spending a lot of money on asphalt when 25
additional spaces can be realized along the west side
of DeSoto.
Morelan agreed with the conclusion, but felt there were
two separate issues. The first is whether or not to
allow parking along the street. The second is the need
14
