MINiJTES
CITY COUNCIL
JULY 26, 1995
for additional parking within Pioneer Park. Morelan
pointed out that DeSoto was constructed specifically
for on-street parking, and to post the street as no-
parking makes no sense. DeSoto Street is a natural
overflow parking area. However, people will not park
on the street if there is room in the lot. Therefore,
Morelan stated that he did not believe it would become
common to see on-street parking along DeSoto.
The second issue is that parking requirements under the
City's ordinances are not met in Pioneer Park.
Therefore, the City is doing something it would not let
any other business do.
Scalze felt that was not entirely true, pointing out
churches as an example of where parking requirements
are not met.
Morelan felt that over the last several years the City
has required developers to meet the ordinance's parking
requirements.
Scalze pointed out that paving an additional parking
area would be expensive. These would be dollars that
could be used on some other park development. Scalze
reported that when she visits Pioneer Park she always
sees empty parking spaces. Scalze felt parking
shortages at the park were not an everyday occurrence,
and could be the result of scheduling. That is why she
would be interested in seeing documentation of the
parking problem.
Morelan again stated that he felt there were two
separate issues, and the one to be decided tonight is
whether or not to allow parking on the west side of
DeSoto.
Remerowski felt allowing parking on the west side of
DeSoto will not solve the parking problem, but may
delay the need for additional paving.
Scalze asked if limited parking could be posted.
Remerowski thought that the City's ordinance required
vehicles parked on the street to be moved every 24
hours.
Pedersen asked if there was any reason not to remove
the no parking signs.
Scalze reported that there is some concern on the part
15
