MINUTES
CITY COiTNCIL
AUGUST 22, 1995
Jean Donovan reported that the Historical Society has
outgrown the existing space it has at the old fire
station. Last year more than 1,000 people came through
the doors visiting the Historical Society. Donovan
gave a brief outline of the Historical Society's
activities and some of the important historical records
they have as well as their plans for the future in
recreating some rooms in a pioneer home as well as a
church room. Donovan reported that at one point the
Historical 5ociety asked for movable walls to partition
off these rooms. Donovan indicated that they are not
looking for anything extravagant and suggested that
burlap curtains would make a good room divider.
Donovan reported that the Historical Society has
$12,000 in funds set aside for use in setting up the
displays they have planned.
Donovan then outlined the amounts of money other City
groups and departments have been allocated from the 10%
Fund. Donovan pointed out that the Historical Society
has received the least amount of funding. Donovan
stated that she had no quarrel with the past
allocations of the 10% Fund, but suggested that 1995
10% Funds be used to complete the renovation project.
Betty Strohbeen asked how much money the City collects
each year.
The City Administrator estimated that $50,000 was
collected annually.
Fahey felt that the City would need to identify
additional funding sources. Fahey noted that some
cities require that the charitable gambling
organizations licensed in their city spend their money
in the city. Canadian Days and the Fire Department
already do this. Fahey felt that the charitable
organizations should be approached to help assist with
the project. He also noted that some gambling licenses
are coming up for renewal, and felt the City should
aggressively make sure these organizations are
supporting City projects.
Fahey asked if the LCRA was interested in a portion of
the upper level of the fire station for cold storage.
Keis replied that the LCRA would like some storage
there, but pointed out that the storage didn't
necessarily have to be in that location. The lower
level storage was essential, however. Keis asked if
the entrance to the basement at the front of the
building would remain.
6
