MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
SEPTENiBER 5, 1995
Fahey pointed out that the City wants redevelopment to
occur in a coordinated fashion. Fahey felt that the
debate will be a better one once there are proposals to
react to.
Alden felt the Guide should say that it is not the
City's intention to run existing small businesses out
of the area, but rather to include these businesses in
the redevelopment plan.
Fahey stated that the City will be sensitive to the
needs of existing business as the transition to
redevelopment occurs.
RECESS At this point in the meeting, 8:33 P.M., Council took a
short recess. The meeting reconvened at 8:45 P.M.
Fahey expressed concern about #7 under Target Markets
on page 3.5 of the Guide which identifies public uses
for the area.
Bujold replied that public uses are a market, but can
be eliminated from the Guide if the City feels strongly
about it.
Scalze pointed out there are public uses such as a
library which may be something the citizens of Little
Canada could benefit from. There is also the potential
to lease space to public uses. These public uses may
bring people into the area which would be a benefit to
the area's businesses.
Morelan expressed concern with the vision statement on
page 3.4 which indicates that the Rice Street/Little
Canada Road area will "meet the commercial needs of the
community". Morelan pointed out that not all the
commercial needs of the community will be met by this
one area.
Fahey suggested that the statement be revised to refer
to the Rice Street corridor and the Little Canada Road
area.
Morelan pointed out that under "Recommended
Development" on page 3.7, there is reference to 60 to
80 units of owned multi-family housing. Morelan asked
if these units were intended to be townhomes or condos.
Bujold replied that there are a couple of sites along
10
