MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
NOVE:MBER 22, 1995
ARCHITECTURAL The City Planner reported that the Planning Commission
STANDARDS is oontinuing work on developing architectural
standards for the Rice Street/Little Canada Road area.
A draft of the proposed standards should be available
by the end of next week. That draft will be reviewed
at a workshop scheduled for December 12th at 7 P.M.
The Planner hoped that the Council would review the
draft in advance of the workshop and offer any comments
they might have.
Fahey encouraged Council Members to attend the
workshop, feeling it would be productive to discuss the
draft at a joint meeting of the Planning Commission and
Council.
REFUSE/ The City Administrator presented to the Council for
RECYCLING approval a contract renewal for refuse/recycling
CONTRACT services within the City. The Administrator commended
RENEWAL City staff for their work in negotiating the contract.
Morelan asked if there was any discussion about the
frequency of recycling pick-up.
The City Administrator reported that every-other week
service was discussed. However, the haulers indicated
that this would lead to a reduction in the amount of
materials collected. It is less convenient for
residents to remember when the recycling pick-up is.
The haulers also have the staff and equipment scheduled
for weekly pick-up.
Morelan suggested that an every-other week pick-up
would have less wear and tear on streets.
The Administrator noted that the recycling truck does
not have the same weight that a compactor has.
A representative of Bellaire Sanitation reported that
82% of households have recyclables out every week. It
was noted that magazines and junk mail are being added
to the list of materials to be picked up. Therefore,
the volume of recyclables will increase.
Pedersen asked if all the recyclables picked up get
recycled.
Bellaire replied that they do.
The Administrator reported that the City will
communicate through the City's newsletter the fact that
17
