MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
JANUARY 10, 1996
be reconvened. Al1 the interested parties can then be
brought up-to-date on the issues.
Scalze pointed out that the Building Official has
indicated that the building can be used for storage
purposes provided roof improvements are made.
The City Administrator agreed, but pointed out that
this would eliminate LCRA~s use of the building as well
as the Historical Society's plans for expansion of
their exhibit area. The Administrator indicated that
staff is uncomfortable recommending any of the options
outlined in the Building Official's memo until long-
term needs of the various parties are determined.
Scalze pointed out that it may take $60,000 to get the
building to where it needs to be, and the building may
not be a good place to invest that $60,000.
Fahey agreed, and pointed out that if it is determined
that the City does not want to put that kind of money
into the building, it will have to be determined what
the City will do with the building.
Pedersen asked what the cost of roof repairs would be.
Paul Finsness reported that the roof does not drain
properly, and the roof will have to be re-engineered.
The Building Official indicated that if the City is
going to use the building for storage, then the roof
needs to be made functional. The City could employ a
roof inspection firm to determine the life of the
existing roof and what minimal repairs are needed to
extend that life. It may not be necessary to replace
the entire roof.
Morelan felt that the first step is to determine long-
term goals, how to implement those goals, and at what
cost.
Fahey suggested that long-term goals would be dependent
on the cost.
The Building Official estimated that roof repairs could
be done for $20,000 to extend the life for 15 to 20
years.
Fahey pointed out that the building could be used for a
large storage facility. Scalze suggested that Public
Works could use the entire upper level.
15
