MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL AND PI~RK & RECREATION COMMISSION
JANUARY 24, 1996
communities to Little Canada's programs. There is a
lot of time spent in setting up programs, but once they
are up and running, they do not require the resources
it takes to get them off the ground.
The Director reported that the two assistants both have
other jobs, and it is not realistic to expect them to
give more than 15 hours per week to their recreation
positions. The Director reported that the majority of
complaints received have to do with there not being
enough programs offered £or adults and seniors. As a
result, this is where the Recreation Department has
been concentrating its efforts. Seniors have asked for
programs within Little Canada so they do not have to
travel to the other side of Roseville to participate.
The Director agreed that it does take a lot of time to
get a new program up and running, and he currently does
not have the staff to work on those things.
Pedersen suggested that the examples Ables gave earlier
are already being offered through community education.
Ables stated that there are programs not being offered,
such as theater programs.
Morelan indicated that he has been involved with the
area of recreation for a long time. Due to this
involvement he has found that programs must be
promoted, and that effort takes time. Morelan
questioned whether the Recreation Department has the
time to do this with the current staffing situation.
This is why he supports the addition of a full-time
position. Morelan pointed out the probability that
there will be additional senior housing in the City in
the future. Morelan stated that he only saw the demand
for recreation programs increasing.
Johnson agreed that the City's recreation program is
primarily youth sports, and indicated that that is
fairly narrow.
Morelan agreed that the program was primarily sports,
but pointed out that there are other offerings such as
the day camp program.
Johnson felt that youth would like to identify with
Little Canada in other ways than just sports. Johnson
felt that the City could get more creative.
6
