MINUTE5
CITY COUNCIL AND PARK & RECREATION
J~NUARY 24, 1996
Morelan felt that a good, solid youth program that gets
kids participating is the best crime prevention proqram
a city could have.
Fahey pointed out that no one disaqrees with the
comments being made, but stated that the problem,is
defining the program. Fahey suggested that the
Commission brainstorm for ideas. Fahey sugqested a new
name for the Commission could be the
Parks/Recreation/Cultural Commission. Fahey felt the
City should be forward-thinking and should look at what
other offerings could be made. The Commission should
also try and determine how many people would be
interested. Fahey suggested that a way to do this may
be to conduct a survey of residents. The survey could
indicated that the City is considering expanding the
staff in order to provide additional programs, and ask
what programs people would be interested in and at what
cost. Fahey comments that it does no good to add staf£
if there is not interest in additional programs.
Pedersen suggested that there may be programs that
could be offered cooperatively with the school
district.
DeBace pointed out that an example of this is the
walking club. DeBace reported that the school district
has expressed interest in cooperative programs at the
elementary school. However, she has not gone forward
because of time constraints.
Johnson suggested that there are a lot of possibilities
for programs at the middle school, pointing out that
there is a whole population of children at this school
who do not have a lot to do.
Ables pointed out that the school district has the same
problem as the City. That is, not a lot of money for
programs.
The Director stated that there are a lot of communities
encouraging local parks and recreation departments to
work cooperatively and undertake joint efforts to make
things happen.
Holm felt that the Commission's focus was out of
balance between park issues and recreation issues.
There has not been a lot of concern expressed in
7
