MINU'PES
CITY COUNCIL
FEBRUARY 14, 1996
with temporary partitions so that individual displays
can be set up. The Historical Society also needs a
place to keep its records, and is currently looking for
fire-proofed storage facilities.
Fahey suggested that there may be grants available to
fund the Historical Society addition.
Dick Boss stated that it was his opinion that the old
fire station building should remain. Boss pointed out
that the fire station was constructed by the early
volunteer fire fighters at no cost to the City. Boss
felt that the City could afford to invest some dollars
into the building to keep it functioning. Boss felt
the building was a symbol of the volunteerism in the
community, not only from the Fire Department, but the
Recreation Association, Canadian Days, and the
Historical Society.
Fahey asked if the Fire Department would be willing to
contribute financially toward the fire station
renovation.
Boss pointed out the amount of City services that the
taxpayers get for their tax dollars. Boss did not feel
the renovation project should be dependent on
contributions.
Fahey felt that if the various City organizations
supported the project and grant dollars were pursued,
there would be little tax dollars needed for the
project.
Morelan suggested that there may be some citizens who
are not interested in the Historical Society. However,
Morelan felt that some tax dollars were needed to
support the Historical Society's efforts.
Fahey pointed out that with an addition to City Hall to
house the Historical Society, the City could retain the
old fire station for storage for Canadian Days, LCRA,
and Public Works on the upper level, in addition to
LCRA's and the Recreation Department's use of the lower
level.
LaValle suggested that it might be more efficient to
construct a new Public Works garage on the property
north of Pioneer Park, rather than have Public Works
7
