MINUTE5
CITY COUNCIL
FEBRUARY 14, 1996
be something to consider. This would free up land for
additional facilities, like a nature center in Gervais
Mill Park.
Ray Hanson pointed out that if the Historical Sooiety
had an attractive facility, it may attract additional
people to become involved.
John Keis indicated that the LCRA would like to
consolidate their storage in one location, and would
appreciate some storage space in the old fire hall.
LaValle suggested that putting in a floor in the base
of the water tower would provide additional storage
area.
Fahey suggested that the water tower area could be
planned for as expansion storage as part of a
facilities plan.
Fahey indicated that the first step would be for the
Council to authorize a feasibility study for an
addition onto City Hall for the Historical Society,
both in terms of cost and space. That option would
address all the other issues. Fire code improvements
as well as the addition of a unisex handicapped
accessible bathroom in the lower level of the old fire
station will provide for the use of the upper level for
storage purposes and the lower level for assembly
purposes. The stairwell between the two levels would
also need to be addressed.
DeLonais asked if there were two exits in the lower
level.
The Building Official replied that there were two exits
which should comply with fire code standards provided
some improvements are made to the doors.
Fahey asked if anyone had any strong objections to the
concepts discussed thus far. Fahey suggested that the
City try to be creative in locating funding sources for
the improvements.
Scalze pointed out that the lower level of the old fire
station would be used by both LCRA and for senior
recreation uses. Scalze pointed out that the City
obtained a$25,000 Community Development Block Grant
9
