MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
FEBRUARY 28, 1996
Fahey reported the idea was discussed by the Community
Pride Committee, but it was met with a tepid response.
Morelan felt the identification sign would be a good
addition to City Hall, and pointed out it would be paid
for with 10% Fund dollars. Therefore, no City tax
dollars would be spent. Morelan pointed out, however,
$11,500 is a lot of money to spend on an identification
sign when there is a 200 foot tall water tower next to
the building with the City's name on it. Morelan
agreed there may be local businesses and craftsmen
willing to donate time and materials toward the
construction of the sign.
Fahey suggested the matter be tabled and City staff get
a cost for the fabricated portion of the sign. Fahey
agreed there may be contractors in the City who would
donate brickwork, etc. to install the sign.
Scalze asked about liability issues. LaValle pointed
out the City's Building Official would inspect the sign
to ensure it was installed properly.
Pedersen pointed out the Council previously discussed
installation of an identification sign with a scrolling
message board. At that time the consensus was the sign
was too expe.nsive. Pedersen expressed concern with the
cost of this sign proposal.
Fahey pointed out the City has a lot of needs, and
suggested the $11,50o may be put to better use
addressing more important needs. However, Fahey felt
staff should get an estimate for the fabricated portion
of the sign. Once that figure is known, the Council
can decide whether or not to pursue the donation of
time and materials to get the sign installed.
While Pedersen felt the design of the sign was
attractive, he pointed out that it clashes with the
architecture of City Hall.
Scalze reported the design was decided upon based on
the good reaction the City has had to its entrance
signs. Scalze pointed out the brick base would match
the brick on City Aall. Scalze stated that if the
intent is to not proceed with the sign, then staff
should not bother to get estimates for fabrication.
Scalze pointed out the cost of the sign is in the
17
