MIN[]TES
CITY COUNCIL
MARCH 13, 1996
Pedersen suggested that before the money is spent on a
feasibility report, the City's relationship with the
Historical Society be re-evaluated and some sort of
definition on the mission of the Historical Society be
provided. Pedersen suggested that the issue be tabled
for a month and a task force be set up to explore the
issues.
Scalze agreed there were issues up in the air which
should be discussed.
Pedersen reported the Minnesota Historical Society
provides a service wherein they will visit a local
historical society, view their collection, and provide
some insight for focusing a collection. Pedersen felt
there needed to be more definition of how much space is
needed by the Historical Society. Pedersen suggested
space requirements may be greatly different depending
on the mission of an historical society.
The City Administrator reported the Minnesota
Historical Society will do an assessment of the City's
Historical Society which would include looking at the
focus of the organization. Typically suggestions for
policy revisions are made to direct the focus so it is
more germane to the history of the area. There is no
charge for this service. The Administrator suggested
the study be discussed with the Little Canada
Historical Society to determine if they are receptive
to it. After the study is completed, a workshop could
be held with the Historical Society and City Council to
discuss the results of the study.
Scalze felt the study would be beneficial to all
concerned.
Morelan felt the study would give the project more
definition. Before spending money on architectural
fees, the whole situation can be looked at to see where
it is at. Morelan felt Little Canada needed a
Historical Society. Morelan pointed out the City's
mission statement talks about preserving the City's
unique heritage. To do that without spending City
funds is not realistic. Morelan felt it would be good
for the City to find out a little more about the
Historical Society, who they are, what their
recruitment process is, what assurance there is that
they will be around tomorrow.
It was the consensus of the Council to hold a workshop
with the Historical Society to discuss the issues
